Movies: Milk

Milk (2008)
Milk is a biographical film based on the life of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist and politician. He was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. Sean Penn plays Harvey Milk and he is extraordinary, unbelievably amazing, and deserves that Oscar for Best Actor. In fact, the film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

The movie begins in New York City on Harvey Milk's 40th birthday. You are soon acquainted with James Franco's character, Scott Smith, who becomes Harvey's partner. They decide to move to San Francisco and open a film shop. But soon after, Harvey and Scott were prejudiced because of their relationship and lifestyle. Thus the beginning of Harvey's political career. The film follows his political life as he and his supporters, friends, lovers battle their way in the Castro neighborhood (and soon the city of San Francisco) in order to fight for gay rights.

Milk has received high acclaim from many film critics. It also received an incredible high response from Rotten Tomatoes (a 94% which is pretty rare). I'm not one go see dramatic or serious films, so it took me a while to get the nerve to watch the film. I was not disappointed; even though the majority of the movie is based on politics there is also a deep story of friendship and love. It's also quite hilarious at times which makes the movie enjoyable and comfortable to watch. It's a great way to reveal yourself to the troubles and experiences of what the gay community has had to deal with and are still facing today. I know that I have a better understanding and just watching how hard they fought and are fighting still, it really makes me what to do something and be apart of their world as well.

Truly one of the most inspiring films that I've watched.
