Broadway: The Scottsboro Boys

The Scottsboro Boys  is a musical based on the legendary story of the Scottsboro Boys trail. The trail dealt with nine African American teenage boys who were accused of a rape in Alabama in 1931. The importance of this trail is that it dealt with racism and the right to a fair trial for anybody - no matter color of skin.

The musical has the framework of a minstrel show which has been altered to create a musical social critique with a company that is primarily African-American (there's one person who isn't African American). The show actually closed on Broadway in December 2010, but it still received twelve Tony Award Nominations in the recent Tony Awards. This musical however, was one of the musical that had the second most nominations aside from The Book of Mormon

"Commencing In Chattanooga" at the 2011 Tony Awards

I've always been found of musicals with a historical background and with an actual meaning behind it. Nothing like romance nor desires for fame. I like how there is an actual story of race and brotherhood. It think musicals like this have so much power and so much to offer to audiences. It reminds me in away of the old musical Ragtime. I'm sad that I didn't have an opportunity to see the actual musical, but with 12 Tony nominations you know it'll come back!

Love,
