Dying Your Hair

Trust me there are more colors than these!
I have no idea why, but my mother let me first dye my hair when I was in middle school - and since then I've had to idea what my color my natural hair is! (Right now it seems to be pretty close to the real color!). So this is a helpful little guide to dying your own hair - but if you really don't feel confident or have had weird hair things happen to you in the past, you should probably let a professional dye your hair.

Step 1 : Choose a Color You're Comfortable With
I don't know if you want to go extremely different, a lighter shade, or just an unspeakable color (haha). There are many types of hair dye these days so select your shade of color. Be sure to look at how the dye will change your hair - it may not turn out the same, just somewhere around that color, so use caution.

The main brands that I've used : Clairol, L'Oreal, Herbal Essences, Revlon, and Splat
(I really did dye my hair a lot!)

Step 2 : Protect Your Bathroom!
Dying your hair can get pretty messy and if it drops on your floor or counter or where ever you're dying you hair it can stain or be a really big bitch to get out. So protect your floors and basically anywhere you'll be with dye in your hair.

Step 3 : Protect Yourself!
When dying your hair, there is a tendency that it gets on your skin (mostly around your neck, back, arms, edge of your face). So wear an old shirt that you wouldn't mind getting dyed or if you have one of those hair salon capes that would be really helpful too.
Keep a little piece of the box so you know which
color to dye your hair for roots!

TIP: IT's easier to go darker, than lighter.
Lighter dyes call for you to often bleach your hair!

Step 4: Making the Mix
Using the gloves provided in the box (or make sure you have protective gloves!) follow the directions that come together in the box about mixing the dye. There's usually three separate parts - two go together, one is for after you dye your hair - but each box is different.

Step 5: Apply to Hair
Before actually dying the hair, make sure you read the instructions carefully (even do the skin test cause you never know!) And then apply Vaseline or lip balm around the hairline or where-ever the dye will be exposed to the skin - this prevents staining, nice right?

For Dying All Your Hair
It always says that you should start with underneath to get your roots or stuff like that, I always start from the top and work my way in. That way I'm guaranteed that my hair will clearly be different. After applying it all over, I like to massage my hair with the dye - like a shampooing treatment, make sure the color sink in and all.  This is actually the easiest way to dye your hair because you don't have to worry about other hairs getting in and stuff like that. So after you're done with the dye, set a timer and wait the appropriate time on the box.

For Dying Parts of Your Hair
This is a little trickery, okay, make sure you have a distinct place you wish to dye your hair. Separate it from the rest of your hair completely. You will just lather and cake on dye only to this area. It's really up to you if you want to go all the way to your roots or start where ever you want. I've dyed my bangs different colors (red obviously), and I never really started from my roots - its all your preference. Then, its nice to have foil or some kind of wrapping material to set the hair in to dye. Wait the appropriate time on the box. If you're dying your hair a funky color (blue, green, purple, red, whatever) actually blow dry your hair - it will make the color even more vibrant.

Wanna try an Extreme color? Try Splat!

For Dying Only Your Roots
This is basically what it sounds like, you only dye your roots. Make sure it's the same box and color when doing your roots. Dying the roots means the new hair that just popped out and is your natural hair color not the dyed color you did. So once you applied only to your roots, wait the appropriate time on the box. Add 10 minutes if you're coloring gray hairs!

Step 6: Clean Up.
While the dye is dying (ha), this is a good time to clean yourself and bathroom. So, without disturbing the dye on your hair, wipe the excess dye off your neck and forehead with a paper towel (makeup wipes or wipes in general help a lot!). And then throw away all the crapola you just used - don't throw away anything you didn't use, and keep a record of what dye and color you used for next time! Wipe your counter or clean if there are any stains.

Step 7: Shower Time
After waiting the appropriate time, step into the shower, water and rinse your hair - lather it up and wash it until no more dye leaves your hair. Follow the same procedure as if you just shampooed your hair.  Use the conditioner (or whatever is left in the hair dye kit) and leave it in your hair for about five minutes. Then rinse it out.

I dyed my friend's hair blue!
Step 8: Dry Dry Dry
Use an old towel, or one you don't really mind staining. Okay, so if you got all the dye out of your hair, there's still a chance that some chemical may be there and you don't wanna stain or ruin your nice towels - MAMA ALPHA got really mad at me once. You can blow dry or natural dry your hair  (naturally dying your hair will retain more shine though). Avoid exposing your new hair to the sun for extended times because it can affect the freshly applied dye.

Step 9: Taking Care of Your Hair
Wash you hair the next day - wait 24 hours! Condition with your normal conditioner but leave it in for five minutes again. Some shampoos may contain harsh chemicals that can strip the dye out of your hair so use caution, read the label on your shampoo and make sure it says its safe for colored hair. Try to get Shampoo and Conditioner for Colored Hair/Dyed Hair to ensure that your dye lasts for longer. To take care of your hair, don't dye your hair too often or it can get damaged terribly.

I've always loved changing my hair, colors and styles, but now I've settled on what I think is my natural hair color. It's so much fun to dye hair though, especially when you do something wild and crazy!! If you're still living with your parents - make sure you get their consent or know that you're dying your hair!!

Good Luck!
Love,
ALPHA
