Periods - They Kinda Suck.

Every once of month we all know that Mother Nature has a little gift for us. Although some of us maybe quite happy to receive, it's often a pain to deal with! To deal with this, we all have our special tools. For the rescue we have pads, tampons, diva cups and galore!

Let's start with pads. There are so many types of pads it gets confusing which ones to buy nowadays! I mean you have thin winged ones, night pads, long wingless ones - what to do, what to do! Here's the main list.

1. Fit -
Tween, Regular, Long, Longest, Overnight
This one is really your preference, its the size of the pad.

2. Absorbency -
Light, Medium, Heavy, Maximum Protection
Depending on how much you bleed...it's the thickness of the pad.

3. Wings or Wingless?
Well, wings I feel are more secure and stay in place more often. Wingless, after talking to Mama Alpha, is used more often when there's not that much blood.

4. Extra Perks!

Odor Absorbing - This is basically what it sounds like. If it smells kinda funky, this will try to absorb that funk.
Silk - It is extra soft, very nice for your bum!
Pads with Wipes - They're separate, but on the package with the pad there's a wet wipe to clean after.
Compact - They fold more and are in a convenient size so you can put them in smaller places (like clutch bags)

Here are the most popular brands :  Always, Kotex, Stayfree, Whisper

Now Tampons, not as complicated as pads thank goodness! Okay, tampons come in super light, light, regular, super (heavy), and super plus. It's the same as number 2 about pads - absorbency. But what's different is the "applicator" - there's cardboard, plastic or none. Personally, i think plastic is easiest to use because it can be curved to make it helpful to get it up there. And then there are the extra perks: scented, sport, and comfort.

I think the biggest problem that women have with tampons is, well, actually using it. There is a fear of actually putting something up there and fear of leaving it there. Well, Alpha found this video a long time ago - its hilarious, but very informative! So here:

Besides Pads and Tampons there are alternative ways to deal with your period! Some women believe that pads and tampons are too unhygienic and unsafe due to their affects on vaginal health. (Check this out Tampon Health). So! There are other ways like softcups or menstrual cups, they can be left in safely for up to 12 hours without leaking or risk. They seem to be cleaner, safer, greener, more convenient, body-positive and cheap (and there's a money back guarantee if you only want to try it).

<< The Diva Cup!

Here are some of the main ones!

Personally I haven't used any of them, but my sisters both have used a dive cup and love it a lot. It is a real money saver and helps the earth! You just have make sure you keep it well cleaned. To learn how to use it click on the links!
