Riots in London? Violence for the last three days? What's happening?
It has been reported that fires have been burning in parts of London after a third day of violence and looting in the city's streets. The violence first began on Saturday after a peaceful protest in Tottenham over the fatal shooting of a man by police. Now, shops are being looted and building are set on fire as the police clash with the youth. This trouble is spreading fast already in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol. At least 225 people have been arrested and 36 charged following the riots across London over the past three days.
In the first outbreak of violence on Monday, groups of people began attacking the police in Hackney by thowing rocks and a bin at officers. The trouble escalated when police cars were also smashed by youths armed with wooden poles and metal bars. Looters smashed their way into shops.
A man who witnessed illustrates the scene, "One older woman was dragged out and they set the car on fire. Then another car around the corner was on fire, then we counted about 12 or 15 shops that had been looted"
Oh my goodness...what is happening to London! This is terrible and scary - I realize they these people are passionate about their cause but this is unforgivable and inexcusable - for both sides!! There is just so much violence; it's so tragic! I mean to think that Alpha was there just a few weeks ago...and also to think that some of our friends are planning to attend university there in the fall! Oh my goodness, oh my goodness!! I really do hope that no further damage is created nor deaths or injuries. This is frightening and horrid!
