Sex and the City: Hello Girls

The Ladies
I already know what your thinking, this is such an old TV show and well the movies aren't that great either (well, that's my personal opinion). I guess I experienced Sex and the City the other way. I watched the movies first without really knowing what it was about and so it was not really the best way to expose myself to that world. I didn't like the movies obviously...but it did make me interested in the show. And now, well...I've been watching every episode.

The TV Show is actually pretty great for women. I mean it seriously is like a guide book for relationships, sex, and love. They go through so many different scenarios and the emotions of women - it's like watching our lives projected through these four amazing women. Sex and the City exposes the world of fashion, men, everyday grown up life and the strength of friendship. So you know, I bought the book the whole series is about. I'm only at the very beginning so I'm sure I'll have more posts inspired by the actual book. For now, I really just want to talk about the personalities in the show: Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbs. These four women I feel represent a lot of real women, each are pretty different and have a different aspect on relationships and life styles. Which lady do you see yourself in the most?

*****
Carrie Bradshaw - The Undecided
The entire series is narrated  from her perspective and basically the show is about her (she is the one writing the column). Well, in order to write her columns she turns to her experiences with love, sex and relationships as well as her friends. I mean, she really does cover it all from emotional dependence to sexual independence.

Well, Carrie is quirky, flirty, and every guy's perfect first date. But also a bit jumpy and nervous at times. There is a palpable anxiety about her - she's always asking questions and fretting about her love life and her social theories. It's tough for her to find the right match - I mean when she's with a guy, can he live up to her romantic ideal? (She might be the pickiest one in the whole group if you ask me!)

She's always consulting her friends before she makes most decisions and has issues on dependency and  independency matters - she needs a lot of support but doesn't want to be suffocated (she has had panic attacks over marriage but still clings to the relationships). Carrie has had both long and short term relationships, and always seems to be confused with what she wants in a relationship - commitment? not ready yet? independence? But even though she's been hurt, she always regains her strength and open herself to new loves.

Carrie seems to be the core of the four girls. She's  very warm, concerned for and loyal to her friends. She always talks about all sorts of problems she has but at the same time comforts and listens to their problems as well. Carrie is also quite funny, intellectually witty and surprisingly insightful but she really does seem to be unsure of herself and quite clumsy. I think there is a little Carrie in all of us - all she wants is to be happy and all we want is to be happy in our own way at our own pace - even if that means being single with a great group of friends or with a man.

Miranda Hobbs - The Career

Miranda is smart, self-assured and proud of her achievements. She raises the bar for herself continually, be it in her professional or personal life. She made partner in her law firm and was able to buy her own pre-war apartment on the Upper West Side. She craves structure in her days, her clothing and her relationships. While she's had her fair share of romance, men don't come first. Guys are a distant third to her friends and career. And this independence is attractive to some men, in measured doses.

She mostly denies her feelings and softer side, but it's obvious to everyone else but her that she has them. She's very orderly and rigorous, a devoted rule-follower and a reliable friend and employee. Very concerned with her own principles, she becomes quite inflexible and has trouble with giving in to her instincts and wilder side. Her repressed anger also adds to her tension and rigidity, making it difficult for her to empathize and accept other viewpoints. She's skeptical and cynical but ultimately also an idealist, finally learning to help people and five them direction and unconditional love.

Cuddling and cutesy is certainly not essential. She takes charge and she means business, but her heart doesn't always buy into this, and luckily allows for some unplanned frisky fun. She's struggled with her love life and, at times, abandoned the pursuit of love altogether. Tough and down-to-earth, she doesn't open up easily, masking her vulnerability with cynicism and self-deprecating humor. Throughout her long-term relationship with Steve, she had bouts of doubt about her true feelings and was constantly frustrated with Steve's laid-back approach to life.

Charlotte York - The Traditional
Charlotte has a refreshingly optimistic outlook on love and romance amidst the ever-complex dating scene of NYC. Well-bred, she walks through life with a perfect sense of decorum. And a lot of idealism. She really is the ultimate romantic idealist. Charlotte had a crystalline vision of the life she wanted to have. First and foremost she wanted to get married. She wanted true love.

She's really driven to achieve perfection: the perfect love and the perfect marriage. She's also  completely focused on the superficial values like a man's financial situation and social prestige. She attracts by trying to figure out what men would value in a woman in order to want marriage with her and acts that way, while at the same time ignores and dismisses her own feelings in the process. She's very concerned with image and wants to appear refined, respectable and feminine - in other words perfect for marriage with a perfect man. In the end Charlotte manages to psychologically evolve - she looks behind appearances and falls in love with someone that can satisfy her deeper needs.

Even though she's been hurt before, it hasn't caused her to give up on love. If anything, her resolve to fall in love is stronger than ever. Charlotte works hard to solve personal problems and attain her goals and dreams. Although she's had her dreams and heart broken, Charlotte didn't become embittered about love or life. Refreshingly optimistic, sometimes her preppy, peppy attitude can be difficult to maintain. However, if anyone can be the perfect wife, employee, friend and shopper, all with a lovely smile, it's her!

Samantha Jones -  The Sex
Samantha is a successful PR exec who knows what she wants - and most of the time, she gets it. She radiates confidence in everything she does, whether it's landing a star client, getting a table at the trendiest restaurant or bedding the hottest guy in the room. Samantha embraces her uninhibited sexuality with a diverse (and large) group of lovers, from wrestling coaches to power bachelors to a studly farmer. Forget wedding dreams; Samantha takes lust over love any night, and she's proud of it. Once, she even experimented with lesbian love, but when her 'girlfriend' demanded more intimacy, Samantha knew it wasn't going to work out. Despite her constant denials, both to the girls and herself, she is capable of loving and falling for men.

This girl is mainly interested in having fun and entertains herself with her own sexuality and excessive explorations of it. For her dating is the ultimate sport so she tends to overdo things (and men). She is a complete epicurean and hedonist, ignoring and dismissing the painful side of life and love and focusing solely on the pleasure that she's after. Samantha loves variety and change and is afraid of losing her freedom by settling with a safer lifestyle. She has an insatiable hunger for power; power in her industry, power over men, and power suits! However, every now and then she's willing to give up a bit of her power in order to obtain more enjoyment.

Some may not approve of her promiscuous lifestyle, but she is definitely proud of it. She loves men; men with power, looks, or a lot of money. She'd rather have a great two weeks than a great forever (But even she falls victim to love from time to time!) Let's face it, if Samantha was a man she'd have medals for all her conquests. She knows what she wants, she gets what she wants, and with a drive like hers, she probably deserve it.

So, really...which one do you see yourself in? I think that every woman is a mixture of all for women. You want to do things at your own pace and comfort like Carrie, you do want to find that eventual traditional love and relationship like Charlotte, you want that awesome career and success like Miranda, and gosh you want really hot sex and self confidence like Samantha. I think the ultimate woman will be able to channel all these ladies - woo, now that will be a fearless woman to behold!

Love,
ALPHA
