"The eye is the jewel of the body"
-Henry David Thoreau
Welcome to Part II of the Essentials of Make Up. After working with the basics of foundations and skin, now is the time to play with your eyes - brows, mascara, eye liners, and eye shadow.
Part II : Eyes
Brows
I've always had difficultly with my eye brows. Let's face it, they're hard to work with and but plucking one little hair it has the potential to give you that sexy charm or make you look like a circus freak. Most ladies usually get their eye brows done by a professional - I just use my sister. By having another person do your eyebrows, they are able to structure a shape almost perfectly. The three most common brow shaping methods are: waxing, threading, or electrolysis. All three have a range of prices and are certainly the most precise method. Waxing and threading lasts two to eight weeks - the same as tweezing. However, electrolysis lasts forever - nice right!
There is always the classic way to just tweeze your own brows. (We'll go over how to do this the best way later!) Selecting the rigtht tweezers are also very important. Try Revlon's! This Alpha uses it and it really is amazing! The silver tips help you to select the hairs easier and because of the thin side it allows you to see where you're plucking. It really is pretty awesome - it doesn't even hurt that much! It's great, I really recommend it. Even though you may be an awesome plucker (haha), there is still those times when you accidentally over do it. Don't freak out! Usually you can pencil in your mistakes! Eye brow pencils and even powders are really helpful to bulk up our eye brows or just fill in those places where you made a boo boo. I know I've had to rely on them many many times.
Mascara
Mascara is one of the essential makeup products almost every woman has. Mascara makes your eyes brighten, bolder, and bigger. Who wouldn't want fierce looking eyes? Especially eyes that smolder and leave people wanting more! Most mascara try to accomplish the five functions: lengthening, thickening, curling, non-smudging, and non-clumping. Depending on what kind of eye lashes you would like, you would buy accordingly. I often use a mascara that lengthens and thickens. Most like the combination of lengthening and curling. To help your mascara, some tend to use an eye lash curler - be careful though cause they can seriously damage your eye lashes!
When applying your mascara you can simply brush your eye lashes, but I've discovered that to get the most out of your mascara apply them using a small mirror examining the lashes. You'll get a clear view of what and where you need to apply. Also, don't just simply brush, wiggle the brush back and forth this really extends the eye lashes making them longer and not clump! Sweet, right?! This Alpha's favorite mascara is: L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara. It is fantastic - lengthens, thickens and curls! Truly the best mascara I have ever worn!
I will admit though, a close second is Bourjois Volume Glamour Ultra Curl Mascara (left) and Rimmel The Max Volume Falsh (right)
**Fake Eye Lashes**
Okay, honestly fake eye lashes are pretty great. They make you lashes look perfect, but a little too perfect sometimes. They're often pretty extreme so unless you're eyelashes are just really dull I would just stick to mascara. They're also a pain to put on with all the glue and everything. I guess if you have someone to help you apply the lash/lashes it would be easier. If you're curious try it! I really does make you feel like a little super star :)
Eye Liner
Liquid? Gel? Powder? or Pencil? Each person has their own personal favorite - usually based on whether its easy for them to apply. I like my eye liner depending on the occasion. Pencil and Powder are nice for when you want to blend it with your eye shadow - for like a smokey eye look. I also like pencil as my go to touch up eye liner or if I'm in a hurry and I need some basic makeup. It's simple to apply and can be easily fixed. However, pencil often smugges the most. The best pencil eye liner in my opinion is Chanel Precision Eye Definer (right). I find the pencil is also easy for when applying liner underneath the eye. But to have long lasting eye liner, powder is really the way to go. You can get Powder eye liner, or you can simply just use a black or dark eye shadow. Very convenient.
For definite eye liner shape go with liquid and gel. Liquid eye liner feels almost like painting on your eye liner. That said, it's probably the most difficult. But after using it for a while you get the hang of it and it can turn out simply stunning! Liquid is commonly used to do to cute flicks at the ends of the eyes. I like using liquid when I want to achieve the Hollywood Glamour Look. Gel Liner is really like a mix between pencil and liquid. It's easy to apply like the pencil and like the liquid can really create amazing structures. (Left: Revlon Color Stay Liquid Liner; Right: MAC Fluidline Eye Liner Gel)
Eye Shadow
Following the bold black liner, are the numerous options of eye shadows! This is my favorite part of doing my make up. Selecting which color and what kind of style I want to wear for the day. When make up shopping I always know that I'll be coming home with a new palette of colors to play with! Don't be afraid of all the different colors. Wear what you're comfortable with, if you're ready for something fun, bold, crazy, spicy, sexy, classic, we'll cover that in time to come.
Eye shadows come in all kinds of textures: firm powder, loose powder, mousse, cream, pencil, you name it! All have their pros and cons! Besides selecting what kind of texture you also have to deal with colors too! What a hassle...not! We'll go through colors and styles in the future - I'll make sure of it. Applying Eye shadow as well as eye liner actually can depend on the shape of your eye. See what you have! (below). We'll talk about what looks best on the most of the eyes. It's always fun to experiment with make up and see what looks awesome. I know I play with my make up way too much!!
Well, this conclude Part II. Coming up Lips!
Love,
ALPHA
