British Babes

Kate Nash. Lily Allen. Jessie J. What I like about all three of these singers is how they have no limits and really sing about the truth - and aren't afraid to be straight forward and cuss a little (ha, a little - no way!). Also, all three singers are clearly talented! No audio editing - these ladies can really sing (listen to any of their acoustic songs - mind blown).

Kate Nash

This English singer, songwriter, and musician is from London England. Her major hit was her song "Foundations" in 2007 from her platinum selling UK album Made of Bricks - which I can tell you is AMAZING. She was awarded the Best Female Artist at the 2008 BRIT Awards. Her latest album was released last year, My Best Friend Is You. Her second biggest chard hit to date is "Do-Wah-Doo". Her genre is indie pop or rock, basically alternative. So it's an easy jam, what's great about her music is the lyrics! They're just so blunt and quite hilarious. I enjoy her oh so much. Check out her blog

My personal favorites:
Foundations, Merry Happy, Pumpkin Soup

Lily Allen

Probably the most well known out of all the singers...Lily Allen from Hammersmith, London! However, Lily Allen isn't only limited to music anymore, she is also a designer now (Lucy in Disguise).  Her music is part alternative and glam rock but has evolved more into a pop sound. She actually was a MySpace hit! In 2006, she began working on her first album Alright, Still, having her single "Smile" reach the top position on the UK  Singles Chart. Her album was not only popular in the UK, but also in America where she was nominated for a Grammy and MTV Video Music Award - also, the BRIT Awards. She even hosted her own talk-show Lily Allen and Friends on BBC Three.

Her second major album release, It's Not Me, It's You, transformed her music from a pop sound to more of an electropop feel. This also debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It was critically acclaimed, it revealed the singer's musical evolution and maturity said the critics. Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse have been credited with starting a process that led to the media-proclaimed "year of the women" in 2009 that has seen five female artists making music of "experimentalism and fearlessness".

I personally adore Lily Allen. Her music is fun, courageous and honest. The topics of the songs are so real and I find it so easily to connect with them. Although I liked her first album, I prefer her second album - I believe its more raw and musically brilliant. Check her out - Click Here
My Personal Favorites: LDN (Acoustic), Chinese, Him, The Fear, F*** You, Oh My God (ft. Mark Ronson)
She is also really great at covers! - Naive (The Kooks), Womanizer (Britney Spears), Up The Junction (Squeeze)

Jessie J.

Jessie J is an English R&B and Soul artist who rose to fame after having written songs for many other artists - including Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus (She co-wrote Party in the U.S.A) Her first debut single, "Do It Like a Dude" - which I think is fan-fucking-tastic - peaked at number two on the UK Singles Charts. (She originally wrote the song for Rihanna but was told to keep the song for herself - great advice). Her next big hit was "Price Tag" - which I also adore!! It went to number one on the UK Singles Charts (as well as charts in Ireland and New Zealand) and reached top 10 in 19 other countries. This lead to her debut album Who You Are - I have yet to listen to the album completely but I am very impressed so far and can't wait to hear the rest.

My Personal Favorites: Do It Like A Dude, Price Tag, Domino (Her Acoustic Versions are AMAZING)

*****

I realize that these aren't the only amazing British Singers - there's also Amy Winehouse, Adele, Regina Spektor, etc (who are also extraordinary singers with such outstanding talent!) But what I love about these three singers are their lyrics and music. Really, some pop singers these days - their lyrics don't really make sense but just by listening to their lyrics you can really feel their passion and sincerity. They are really inspirational - you really need to listen to them. Click here for the Ultimate British Invasion Playlist.

Love,
