Hot spring baths come in many varieties, indoors and outdoors, gender separated and mixed, developed and undeveloped. Many hot spring baths belong to a ryokan - Japanese Inns, while others are public bath houses. Either way both are truly amazing, relaxing and a total Japanese experience that must be tried.
It's a little intimidating to Westerns (or foreigners in general) because it is essentially taking a bath with a whole bunch of strangers. Once this shock is overcome though, the Japanese bath is probably the best bathing experience you'll ever have! There of course are rules though - this is Japan. Firstly, you can't bring anything into the bath except a thin hand towel and other toiletries you need. Then you must shower yourself first - to get you clean duh. After you shower you are allowed to enter the bath. However, do not rinse your towel in the bath, do not splash around, and do not mix different waters. This is like a spa - relax, rest, and even doze off in the water. When you're done, no need to rinse! There are special minerals in the water to help your body!! You should feel completely relaxed and soothed.
You should just over come your fear of nudity in front of strangers and really go try Japanese baths. Because they are just wonderful!! OH almost forgot...since it is Japan if you have tattoos...most places will not let you bathe! Sorry!!
Love,
ALPHA
