Some of the movies that are going to be released this year (well the major movies!) These are the ones that I want to see out of BuzzFocus' 25 Films We Want To See in 2012 list. See want you think!! ((The movies with the stars are the ones I really really want to see))
Magic Mike – Will Hollywood let Steven Soderbergh shoot a film about male stripper how it should be? Or will they make him edit it enough to leave the viewers there to see male nudity angry? This is not just the male version of Showgirls, this story is based on Channing Tatum’s actual days as a male stripper and features Hollywood Hunks like Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, and Matthew McConaughey but will audiences get to see the full monty? Pull off the quick-release chaps on June 29.
Frankenweenie – is the second Tim Burton’s film done in his signature stylized stop-motion animation. This started as a fun little short and now it’s being expanded to a feature-length film on October 5 and it’s about a boy who brings back his dog back to life, but there are major consequences in reviving the dead. Featuring the voices of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau, and Catherine O’Hara.
**The Great Gatsby – We know everyone was supposed to read it in high school but we wouldn’t be surprised if you just read the cliff notes, but now you can wait until the holidays to see Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story of a Midwesterner is lured into the world of his rich neighbor where everything is not what it seems. Leonard DiCaprio, Isla Fisher, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Tobey Maguire star in this December 25 release.
Snow White and the Huntsman – Yes, it’s another dark take on our childhood fairy tales and shows the story where Snow White is taken to the woods to be killed by the Huntsman. She instead is protected by the Huntsman and is trained to become a warrior who will avenge her death sentence by going after the Evil Queen. Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Charlize Theron (Prometheus) are the players in this fairy tale gone gritty. Please do NOT confuse this with Mirror, Mirror. Look for it June 1
Brave – Pixar’s latest is not a sequel but rather an original princess tale set in Ireland. Merida (Kelly MacDonald, Boardwalk Empire) is not your typical princess; she’s rough and tough, a skilled archer and defiant to her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly, Boondock Saints II) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson, An Education). Merida defies a sacred custom and unleashes chaos into the kingdom. She must exert true bravery and undo the curse before the people of her land are harmed. This will be a Disney 3-D release, features the voices of Kevin McKidd (HBO’s Rome), Julie Walters (Harry Potter Saga), and is scheduled for a June 29 release.
The Amazing Spider-Man – We kind of loathe the idea of this remake true believers, but can’t help but wonder how much deeper into Peter’s past, along with his parents’ history it will go. Can Andrew Garfield spin a larger web than Tobey Maguire? Will Emma Stone sizzle hotter than Kirsten Dunst? Lots of questions will be answered this summer including, “Why are we starting over?” Swinging into theaters near you on July 3.
Avengers – Whether you’re a fanboy whose dreams are nearing completion or just the average Joe who wants to get some satisfaction out of watching both Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor; all will get what they want in the film that will kick off the 2012 summer movie season. Never before has the stars of their own movie joined together to form a colossal team of superheroes but that’s exactly what Marvel had in mind when they knew they struck gold with Iron Man. There is sure to be a lot of winking to the camera, especially by Robert Downey Jr. but if your cup of super hero films has not been filled after 2011, then it will be super-sized and running over on May 4.
**Skyfall – While most of the big blockbusters joust for the box office in the summer, James Bond is stealthily waiting until the fall to complete his mission. Can director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) help us forget about Quantum of Solace? You bet, and with Javier Bardem playing the villain, and Dame Judi Dench this is the one fall time film that we want to see over most summer films. M will be front and center in this third Daniel Craig-Bond film as her past is revealed, we can’t wait for November 9.
**Hunger Games – The idea of this story seems like it came from watching the fantastic Japanese film, Battle Royale and lots of reality television. These are based on the Suzanne Collins series of novels where a futuristic North America has collapsed by war and disaster and is replaced by a new country, Panem. It is split off into 12 districts, which each supply a young boy and girl in a death match to be broadcast across the country. If you want to know what the next big movie franchise is, look no further. This should make Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson household names and the Games begin early in the year, on March 23
Django Unchained – Quentin Tarantino described his latest film as more of a “southern” than a western, but it will be heavily influenced by Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 spaghetti westerns, Django andThe Great Silence. But like all of QT’s verbose films, Unchained is sure to rattle some chains about a runaway slave who becomes a bounty hunter and avenges his enslavement by returning to the plantation to rescue his wife. Jamie Foxx plays the lead role (first offered to Will Smith) and Leonardo DiCaprio plays the plantation owner Calvin Candie. Other Tarantino firsts include James Remar (Dexter), Don Johnson (Machete), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception). They will join QT favorites like Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, and Kurt Russell. Want to know when this outrageous tale of revenge hits theaters? You guessed it, December 25.
Prometheus – Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) returns to the science-fiction genre to direct what promises to be one for the ages. Many have speculated that the film is a prequel to the Alien saga, but we just want to see Noomi Rapace (Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Idris Elba in one extremely cool space flick about the origins of mankind. Love the cast, dig the concept, and what, you still want more? Try a script that’s co-written by Lost showrunner, Damon Lindelof. Prometheus will hit theaters on June 8.
**The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – With just under a year wait, Peter Jackson returns to the Shire to bring us another epic fantasy adapting J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels. Jackson took some time off after the Lord of the Rings trilogy to work on other films, but eventually rescued the production of The Hobbit and took over as director while finishing his work on Tintin. The time it took to push The Hobbit back allowed Martin Freeman to grow into the role as the young Bilbo Baggins. He’ll be joined by a baker’s dozen dwarves, Gandalf (Ian McKellan), Gollum (Andy Serkis), and several other familiar faces. Jackson redefined the event film and fantasy genre so we can’t wait to see how he’ll wow us again on December 14
The Dark Knight Rises – Instead of jumping into another Batman film after The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan blew our minds with Inception, which only made the expectations for his final bat-sequel to raise higher, if that’s actually possible. Anne Hathaway (Devil Wears Prada) jumps into the cat suit while Tom Hardy (Inception) shows off his muscles as Bane. To make Harvey Dent’s legacy remain pure, Batman (Christian Bale) took the fall and became an outlaw. What kind of evil is born in a moment of civil rest? The kind that plans to smoke the bat out and break its back.

Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows – It’s a supernatural period piece starring Johnny Depp (of course) as Barnabas Collins, a rich and powerful playboy who breaks the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) who turns out to be a witch. Instead of killing him, Angelique turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. Over 200 years later, Barnabas is set free in 1972 and discovers Collinwood Manor is no longer the estate he remembered, filled with odd characters. See what comes out of the shadows on May 11.Magic Mike – Will Hollywood let Steven Soderbergh shoot a film about male stripper how it should be?
